American Inventor - Pet Me and Don't Lose a Kidney

By , About.com GuideApril 6, 2006

Follow me on:

Episode four of American Inventor really drove the idea home of how every inventor needs to keep that grip on reality. Yes, we are creative and often eccentric but let's not cross the line folks. Remember the value of doing a search for prior art folks - find out if your invention has already been made before.

Did you guys dig the automatic-pet-petter from episode three of American Inventor? It reminded me of one of those creepy hand piggy banks, the kind that would snatch your coin into a little coffin. How about the lady with the paper sheets, did you love her and hate her sheets?

Here is what you guys had to say about the show. Feel free to leave a comment as well.

Reader Comments on American Inventor - Edited for Brevity

From Mike: I've seen all the episodes so far. My comment is that they don't have the time or expertise to do real inventions. Today real inventions are very complex things and a TV show can't do justice to their complexity.

From professional inventor George Margolin: American Inventor was the "GONG SHOW" with bare boobs and butts, but, the judges surprised me. They really are professional in their fields. The lone "inventor" on the panel really is an inventor who reacts to the contestant's presentations in much the same way that I would (and did). And it seems that the contestants were not forewarned about the "GONG SHOW" aspects the producers were setting up. I've met many would-be inventors like the poor and enthusiastic Lady with the Bed Buddy who had been Bilked out of thousands of dollars by the Invention Promotion Scammers. The real inventor on the panel picked up on that and told her that she had been scammed by scammers who advertise on late night TV. Frankly I would have preferred the beribboned and deribboned young lady as my "Bed Buddy" but that wasn't one of the choices. To sum it up, the show combines real panelists with bunches of pathetic and sympathetic folks being thrown to the lions of the "new Roman circus" the American Television audience.

From Patricia: I am a 51 years old, African-American female with 8 inventions. American Inventor is a God send to me. I was going to try to use one of those Invention help companies but changed my mind, especially when one of the judges on the show said, "They are a rip-off". I am just waiting for a chance to go to an open casting call.

From Andy I think the new baby seat was the best of the show thus far and will be listed as one of the best inventions of this century!!!! I would like to be the promoter of this product as well as having some for my grandchildren.

(2) Patent Librarian @ PTDL :

Dear Independent Inventors,

Your local Patent & Trademark Depository Library that represents the US Patent Office may your best friend. For more about the Patent Library program see: http://www.uspto.gov/go/ptdl/
These libraries provide marketing and patent basics to assist inventors. They also may provide contacts to regional inventor council for networking and further help.

This is the site to go to if you want to talk about the show, have your voice potentially heard by the judges, and play along at home. It’s a fan based site, that’s also focused on real inventors.

In fact, many of the inventors on the show have there inventions posted in the gallery, right along side all the everyday inventors.

There’s inventor resources, wacky products, a cool blog that covers everything from tech, to mom’s products, to dog stuff. There’s also a forum.

Check it out. http://www.americaninventorspot.com
