Chris from the UK wrote me asking if I knew anything about actress Liz Smith having invented bin liners or as we call them state-side, garbage bags. Chris stated that the rumor was that Liz Smith invented bin liners after the war, but as she didn't understand patents, she never got credit.
Chris, I have never heard of Liz Smith being an inventor, however, she is a comedian and perhaps she was making a joke? She did act in several movies about a cheese-loving English inventor called Wallace Gromit. As you mentioned, I have a piece on Canadian inventors, Harry Wasylyk and Larry Hansen who invented the disposable green polyethylene garbage bags. The inventors later sold their invention to Union Carbide who manufactured it under the tradename Glad Garbage bags. Photo: Imageafter
