IBM headed the 2006 United States Patent and Trademark Office's (USPTO) annual list of the top patentees. According to IFI Claims, with 3,621 patents, IBM surpassed its own record and earned more US patents than any other company for the fourteenth consecutive year, exceeding the next closest patentee by 1,170. Samsung claimed second position, Canon was third, Matsushita was fourth, and HP was fifth. All five top patentees exceeded 2,000 patents and had their biggest issue years ever. In the past 5 years, no organization other than IBM has ever been issued more that 2,000 patents per year.
Overall, 2006 set an all-time record with 173,772 patents issued, an average of 476 per day. A 20.8 percent increase in patents compared to 2005. IFI Claims compiles the list from original USPTO data using their own proprietary software. Continue for the full list of top patentees
