Today's Inventors

History is important, however, the best part of inventing is about bringing something new to the world. Thanks to Joanne M. Hayes-Rines, president of United Inventors Association of USA for writing the article Modern Black Inventors* for Ebony Magazine. Joanne feels that when "We think of Black inventors, names like Garrett Morgan and George Washington Carver usually come to mind. But there are many modern-day inventors who have been responsible for groundbreaking developments that have changed America and the world." Joanne goes on to discuss contemporary inventors such as:

• Ophthalmologist Dr. Patricia Guth who in 1988 patented a laser device, called the Laserphaco Probe, used for the removal of cataracts.
• Mark Dean (and his co-inventor Dennis Moeller) created a microcomputer system with bus control means for peripheral processing devices. Their invention paved the way for the growth in the information technology industry. We can plug into our computers peripherals like disk drives, video gear, speakers, and scanners.
• Michel Molaire has been a researcher at Eastman Kodak for more than 20 years in the area of laser printing and optical recording and is one of the top patent-holders at Kodak.
• While employed by Procter & Gamble, Dennis Weatherby developed and received a patent for the automatic dishwasher detergent known by the tradename Cascade.
