The Cork Institute of Technology together with the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind have invented a hot new terrain-mapping device for the visually impaired that can identify terrain or obstacles and read signs. The inventors of VisionRE based the invention on earlier products: one for safer driving called Drive Safe, which used imagery technology to detect pedestrians behind heavy load vehicles; and another called AquaEye that allowed swimmers to detect pool walls.
