Times are tight. Money is tight. Tensions are flaring. Google is accusing Microsoft and Oracle of waging a "hostile, organized campaign" against its Android mobile software.
According to Bloomberg Businessweek, "Apple, Microsoft and Google have ramped up spending on patent portfolios in recent months to gain exclusive rights to a broadening array of technology, much of it used in the emerging area of smartphones." And the various companies have begun to sue one another for patent infringement. For example, Oracle has sued Google over the infringement of Java technology in Android software. This has all led to a regular gold rush on patent-buying.
David Drummond, chief legal officer for Google, said in a blog posting, "We thought it was important to speak out and make it clear that we're determined to preserve Android as a competitive choice for consumers, by stopping those who are trying to strangle it, Android's success has resulted in a hostile, organized campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patents.
