According to a New York Times article by Edmund Andrews, "the world is still seeking a better mousetrap. Even with thousands of mousetrap designs, ranging from spring-loaded jaws to glue snares to poisoned cheese, a new mousetrap patent appears every few weeks." Take a look at our gallery of historical mousetrap patents.
A little mousetrap history - James Henry Atkinson was the British inventor who in 1897 invented the prototype mousetrap called the "Little Nipper". The Little Nipper is the classic snapping mousetrap that we are all familiar with that has the small flat wooden base, the spring trap, and the wire fastenings.
Did you know that the now famous expression, "Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door" is a qoutation by Ralph Waldo Emerson? According to Answers.com "To build a better mousetrap means to achieve an ideal, to reach a pinnacle of achievement, or to create the best possible device in an imperfect world."
