I'm impressed with the recent news of the protest of Canadian scientists against the upcoming passing of Canadian parliamentary Bill C-38, which is being pushed by the Conservative party currently in the majority.
And my two cents, C-38 is a destructive plan, plain and simple. So whose pockets are being lined with this one? The Conservatives are arguing that Canada needs to put more money into exploitation (excuse me satirical typo) commercialization and less into science research and the environment.
For example, the Conservatives want to end funding for the Polar Environmental Atmospheric Research Laboratory in Eureka, Nunavut, which has been tracking ozone depletion, air quality and climate change in the High Arctic since 2005. Well I guess what we don't know, won't kill us.....
The Conservatives want to deeply cut the budgets for Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Library and Archives Canada, the National Research Council Canada, Statistics Canada and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. They want to close the Experimental Lakes Area, a world-renowned research facility in northwestern Ontario. Get rid of the national science adviser and limit all access to federal scientists. Perhaps the Conservative government doesn't want Canada to be world-renowned in science?
There's more. But it is all sickening. I hope my Canadians readers take this all to heart in the next elections. Photo Credit: Richard Webster/and courtesy http://www.deathofevidence.ca

I am glad you are interested in some Canadian bills. I just wish you would have set out both sides of the story as you see it.
There is so much partisanship in Canada today that I generally disregard opinions that are completely one-sided.
Giving both sides – or at least saying where to find them would make your opinion much more credible.
The inference is that in the next election, vote the Conservatives out of office so that the status quo of spending. nay wasting, already scarce tax money so this kind of stuff can be continued. The money required to keep that one monitoring station at Eureka could be better spent in funding small business loan programs. I’d rather see incentives (R&D tax credits) that would encourage such research to be done in the private sector. Nothing the government does is goal-driven – unless, that is, the goal is to perpetuate a perpetual motion machine.
