Play-Doh was originally designed as a wallpaper cleaner. However, its similarity to regular modeling clay without the toxicity or mess made Play-Doh a great toy. Inventor Joe McVicker became a millionaire before his 27th birthday after re-releasing the product as a toy. Photo Courtesy of Hasbro Toys

fascinating..I never would have guessed. I was thinking about glass cleaner or some other sort of cleaner.
Joseph first sold it at a teachers conference and someone liked it and said they wanted to order a “gross”. Joseph said OK and then had to ask around to find out if anyone knew what a “gross” was. He found out it was 144 cans and was relieved that he could fill the order. He told me this story just before he passed away. He went on to sell 30 million cans before he sold the company.

People don’t believe me when I tell them my mother made me clean the wallpaper in our house with wall paper cleaner. If I had known it was really a toy, maybe I would have more fun cleaning the walls.
