Definition: A patent examiner is a federal employee who examines patent applications to determine whether or not a patent can be granted for various new inventions.

Duties of a Patent Examiner

A patent examiner reviews patent applications. A patent examiner will check that the format is right, and that any rules and legal requirements have been followed.

Inventions are examined from a technical standpoint.

A patent examiner will search for prior art in earlier publications, technical literature, and databases of patents to make sure that the application is novel.

Thomas Jefferson was the first patent examiner at the USPTO. Albert Einstein worked at the Swiss Patent Office.
