Can the Tademark Office Conduct a Trademark Search for an Applicant?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Can the Tademark Office Conduct a Trademark Search for an Applicant?
Answer: No. After a trademark application is filed, the Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will conduct a trademark search of the records as part of the official examination process. The official trademark search is not done for the applicant but rather to determine whether the mark applied for can be registered. It is advisable to trademark search the records before filing the application.
