- A resolution was signed by President George Washington on October 3 1789 to officially set a day of public thanksgiving and prayer.
- On October 3, 1863, the proclamation was made by President Lincoln that beginning on November 26, 1863 - the last Thursday in November was a Day of Thanksgiving. This was then passed by an Act of Congress.
