By , About.com Guide

Question: Is The US Copyright Office Where I Go To Register A Copyright? Benefits?
Answer: Although copyright application forms may be available in public libraries and some reference books, the U.S. Copyright Office is the only office that can accept applications and issue registrations.

Do I Have To Register With The US Copyright Office To Be Protected?

No. In general, copyright registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work. See Advantages of Copyright Registration
