The Speak and Spell toy was one of the first electronic handheld toys. As the name suggests the Speak and Spell invented by Texas Instruments was intended to be both fun and educational. It taught children how to spell. The Speak and Spell included a speech synthesizer, a keyboard, and a slot for ROM game library modules. Texas Instruments received a patent for the toy - US 3934233. The first Speak & Spell was introduced to the public at the Consumer Electronics Show in June 1978.
