An Wang was born in Shanghai, China. He immigrated to the United States in 1945 and received his Ph.D. in applied physics from Harvard University in 1948.

An Wang Founded Wang Laboratories

Doctor An Wang founded Wang Laboratories in 1951 to develop specialty electronic devices. By 1989, Wang Laboratories employed over 30,000 people with $3 billion a year in sales. Wang Laboratories sold desktop calculators and some of the first word processors. Dr. An Wang is responsible for the original development of the basic components and systems of digital computing machines.

An Wang holds more than thirty-five patents that revolutionized the information processing industry including patent # 2,708,722 for a magnetic pulse transfer controlling device that became essential to computer memory and crucial to the future development of digital information technology. Dr. An Wang was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1988.
